The go-to-guide for skip hire beginners.
Hiring a skip can be an intimidating experience if you have never done it before, there are so many things you must think about that nobody tells you. For instance, what is a cubic yard? How do I get a skip permit – do I even need one?
You will have many questions and that is why we wanted to make an article for the skip hire beginners. In this article we have provided expert answers for some of the most common concerns and questions that our new customers have.
1. What can’t I put in a skip?
- Asbestos*
- Batteries
- Medicinal waste including syringes and bio-hazard products
- Electrical appliances and equipment
- Paint cans/paint
- Fridges, freezers and air con unit
- Gas cannisters and gas bottles
- TVs
- Tyres*
- Oil*, petrol and diesel
- Plasterboard
- Liquids
- Hazardous and toxic materials*
- Fluorescent tubes
As convenient as it is to put these in your skip without thinking twice, be aware that you can be charged and have the prohibited items returned to you.
It is always advised that you keep an eye on your skip if it is in an accessible and public area as people can put their rubbish in your skip. If this happens, you will unfortunately be responsible for the skips content.
However, you can have the option to hire lockable skips so you have peace of mind that this won’t happen.
2. What size skip do I need?
We would never expect anyone whether a first time or a returning customer to know what size skip they need. It will differ every time and it is our job to help you determine what the best size skip will be for your needs.
However if you are simply looking for a rough answer, you can find out all the skip sizes we have and what they are suited for in our Skip Size Guide UK.
Usually the required skip size will be down to the amount of waste you have and how much space you have on your property. You don’t want to hire a skip that’s too small as then you may have to hire another or pay additional fees, however you don’t want to pay for empty space if you hire a skip that’s too big.
The best way to avoid hiring the wrong skip is to give our team a call. We are here to ensure that you are given accurate advice as to what skip you need and inform you of the process. To speak with a friendly member of our team, you can catch us on 03300 948 170
3. How much is it to hire a skip?
Unfortunately there isn’t a one size fits all price when it comes to skips. The price of a skip differs quite significantly depending on a range of factors. Of course, the larger the skip the more the cost will be and another contributing factor towards the price will be the area you’re in.
Typically, the North of the UK tends to be cheaper for skip hire due to lower disposal and operation costs. However, the South is typically more expensive when it comes to skip hire. Another cost will be determined based on if you need a skip permit or not and how long for.
The average cost of a skip varies across the UK; however we can find out the cost for the skip you need and in your area in a few minutes. If you are looking for a fast quote, you are more than welcome to call and ask us for a free quote.
4. What is a skip permit and do I need one?
Sometimes you may not have a driveway or space on your private land for a skip, this where you will need to put your skip on a public road. Also known as an ‘on-road skip’, this will need to be organised before you have your skip delivered as they can take a few days to arrange and will have extra costs.
You can get skip permits from your local council; however we can arrange this for you so don’t worry about having to do figure this out. However, if it’s in a controlled parking zone, for example on a single yellow line or in a pay and display bay then you will need a parking suspension.
Think that you will need to put your skip on a public highway? We can happily arrange a permit for you!
5. What is a CPZ suspension?
A CPZ is a controlled parking zone, this is typically part of a road where you can only park under certain conditions. This for example includes areas with yellow lines, bay parking of resident parking spaces. A CPZ suspension is an additional fee added to a skip permit. Please check if there is enough space for a skip in your area before arranging any skip permits or CPZ suspensions.
6. What safety rules must you follow
If you are planning on hiring a skip, you may have to follow a few safety rules. Depending on your location, your local council may require that you cover the skip and highlight its location with lights and/or cones. However, it is usually a requirement that you have a covering on your skip and that you put safety lights on the skip. But don’t worry – your skip company can usually tell you what you will need and you can get a hold of lights and covers online on places such as Amazon or Ebay.
Always be cautious of skip hire companies that don’t prewarn you about safety rules if your skip is going to be put on a public highway. You could be fined up to £1000 if you don’t abide by the local council’s safety rules. However, if you are putting the skip on private land, the rules don’t apply.
7. Do skip companies help load the skip?
Unfortunately skip hire only includes delivery and removal of your skip, there is no labour involved for the provider. If you will need help loading your waste however, this is where we would discuss the option of a man and van service. Therefore, please be aware that if you are hiring a skip that you will have to load the rubbish or skip bags into the skip yourself unless you choose an alternative option.
8. What is a wait and load service?
A wait and load skip services is an ideal option for people who don’t have a lot of waste or have limited access for a skip. All you will need to do is have your waste in skip bags ready to go and when the skip lorry arrives, it will wait while you load the vehicle with the waste. However, if you need help loading the vehicle, you can opt for a man and a van service instead.
9. How long can I hire a skip for?
When you hire a skip, the costs usually cover a 2 week hire, however you can hire a skip for longer or for a shorter period of time. You can discuss with the skip company when you would like the skip delivered and collect, or you can choose to request a cancellation later when you know a more accurate time. It is always advised that you let your company know a few days in advance when you would like it collected as then this will give them a reasonable time to arrange this.
If you do need to hire a skip for a while longer, then do bring this up when you first contact a company, sometimes you may be charged more other times they may throw this in for no additional cost.
Usually it’s uncommon for a business to charge more unless they’re running low on the old’ skip supply but skip permits and CPZ suspensions will be what brings the cost up the longer you need a skip.
10. What access requirements do you need for the skip delivery?
Most skips are delivered via HGV lorries and are a lot wider than a typical car. Therefore you will need to be sure that there is enough space for a lorry to get the skip to the designated location in or outside your property. We would recommend that you measure the available space and then ask your skip company if this will be big enough for the access of the skip lorry.
11. How much can you put in your skip?
There are weight restrictions in place when you hire a skip, however this is rarely an issue for domestic skip hire. This question applies more people hiring a skip for construction or commercial waste. People who are getting rid of heavy waste such as soil, bricks and rubble must ensure that they meet weight guidelines depending on which skip you hire.
If you are planning on hiring a skip, be sure to ask your advisor for the weight restrictions of the skip.
12. What does level loaded mean?
When hiring a skip you will often hear the words ‘level loaded’, this is a term used to describe the limit in a skip where waste must not go above. If you exceed this height, your skip may be refused collection and/or the skip lorry driver may ask you to remove waste before they take it away.
To avoid this inconvenience, it is advised that you follow the level loaded rule and ensure that you don’t overfill this line. Overloading skips are dangerous to transport as debris can fall out of the skip and cause damage or injury to people.
13. Protect your driveway – what’s the best way?
A skip is a heavy metal box and unfortunately this means it can damage certain driveways such as soft tarmac, block paving or resin when it is delivered. However, this can easily be avoided by following different methods. If you are having a skip delivered, what we would advise is placing down big planks of wood or scaffolding planks so we can rest the skip on these.
Please also remember that when the lorry arrives to pick up your filled skip, this is going to make the lorry heavier and the pressure can unfortunately damage driveways. If you are worried about damage to your driveway, please speak to your skip provider and they will then let you know how you can best protect it!
14. Should I hire a mixed waste or inert waste skip?
When you hire a skip, you can’t fill it with everything, unfortunately for safety and sustainability reasons, we have different skips for different waste. This makes it easier for us to separate the waste and to ensure the safety of you, ourselves, and others.
If you are a homeowner, you more than likely will be needing to hire a mixed waste skip. This is because you will be getting rid of a lot of different types of waste. However, if you have inert waste to throw away you will specifically need an inert skip. Inert waste is material that slowly or does not decompose, such as; soil, concrete, rubble and cement.
If you let your skip company know what you’re thinking of throwing away then they will be able to advise you on the correct skip type.
15. Where does your collected waste go?
Once your skip has been picked up, your waste will then be taken to a nearby licensed commercial waste station. At the transfer station, they sort through the waste, determining what is recyclable, biodegradable and non-recyclable. Depending on what the waste type is, the waste will either be incinerated, taken to an energy facility, recycled or taken to a landfill site.
