Skip Hire Prices – How much is it to hire a skip nowadays?

June 15, 2022

If you’re looking to hire a skip and are wondering how much the average skip is in the UK, we can give you our professional insight.

Firstly, the boring introduction of skip hire. Skips are a great way for you to get rid of waste if you plan on making lots of it. Typically, when compared to other waste removal methods, they are cost-effective and convenient, making them a popular service.

But regardless of anything, the question we always have is – how much will it be? Everyone loves to have an idea of the price tag before they buy, and we want to help with that.

As with anything , there are a number of different factors that will affect the price. This is why we have put together a skip hire cost guide. Here we discuss each and every little thing that will bring the price of your skip up or down.

  1. The cost of different skip sizes

The more there is of something, the more the costs will be, and this goes for skip hire.

If you need a small skip, this will of course be considerably less than a bigger skip.

With hiring a bigger skip, the skip company will need to use bigger vehicles for delivery and collection as well as manage a larger quantity of waste.

But, just because the skip you’re hiring is bigger, doesn’t mean you should be paying over the odds.

To make sure that you are not being charged more than you need to, you can always speak to the skip company beforehand and they will advise you on the size skip you need.

*Kindly note the prices we have provided in our guide may fluctuate, therefore always double check by requesting a quote.

2. Where do you plan on putting your skip?

If you’re going to have your skip on your driveway, front garden or private property, then you won’t incur any extra costs. However, if you need to put your skip on a public highway, pavement or car parking space – then you will.

The reason for this isn’t down to the skip companies, it’s down to the council. To prevent congestion and other issues, you will need to apply for a skip permit if you plan to put your skip in a public space.

Typically, your skip company can help arrange this for you, they will just add the cost of the permit onto the total price of your skip. The same goes for CPZ suspensions which are required for skips in public car spaces.

A skip permit could be anywhere from £15 to £60 depending on the council’s fees.

3. Whereabouts in the UK do you live?

As with anything, where you live will have an impact on how much your skip costs.

If you’re hiring a skip in the middle of London, you can expect to pay a lot more than a skip in Newcastle. But then if you’re in the middle of nowhere, it may cost more due to limited choices in skip hire

For instance, while you may pay £115 for a skip up North, in London you could be looking at the same skip but for £135-£230.

One way to keep the costs down is to speak to a professional and get advised on the right skip size. Here you won’t waste money on the wrong skip.

Make sure you research around for money saving tips when it comes to skip hire!

4. How long do you need the skip for?

Typically, the maximum hire period is 2 weeks for any skip. Of course, this will depend on the regulations set by the skip company you choose but usually this is standard.

However, if you need the skip for longer, both the company and the council (if a permit is involved) may request extra costs to cover the extension of the skip hire period.

5. Check for hidden fees

Most skip companies will provide a price without the VAT, but they will usually state this before confirming the quote. However, just be sure to ask if VAT is included when presented with price.

By calling the skip company directly, you can speak with a team member and express any queries or concerns you have with the price you get.
