74% of consumers are willing to pay more money for sustainable packaging.

September 21, 2020

According to a survey conducted by Trivium Packaging, nearly ¾ of people would spend more for sustainable packaging.

Trivium’s report which was published early on in April, surveyed candidates for their preferences related to sustainable packaging. They analysed their commitment to spend more to ensure that the products they buy are apparent with environmentally-friendly packaging.

Many consumers consider themselves as ‘environmentally aware’, with two out of three people considering recyclable packaging as important. Of the 74% of consumers that said they would pay for sustainable packaging, a lot of these people also agreed to pay an increased cost of 10% or more.

This is the kind of commitment we like to see!

If it means protecting the planet, the public are willing to pay more.

It is promising news for the environment that people are looking to spend more money on biodegradable or recyclable packaging. People are becoming more and more aware of the environmental impacts of packaging and are starting to commit themselves to prevent rubbish from ending up in our natural habitats.

‘’This increased consumer awareness, driven by increased media coverage of the environmental impacts of pollution and large corporations transitioning away from plastics, whether it’s straws, grocery bags, or plastic water bottles, truly underscores our findings,” – Michael Mapes, CEO, Trivium Packaging.’’

These statistics show us that there is a major opportunity for brands to engage users with sustainable packaging. We could really influence purchasing decisions that will positively affect our environment.

The impact of harmful packaging

With most people who avoid buying ‘harmful packaging’, 68% associated plastic with ocean pollution and therefore try to refrain from using unnecessary plastics. This includes using less straws, plastics bags and plastic drinking cups.

In the past few years, 79% of all plastic ends up in landfills or in our environment, which as we know is having devastating effects on wildlife and spoiling natural beauty.

Alongside the large number of people associating plastic with ocean pollution, almost 60% of consumers would be unwilling to buy a product that is being kept in harmful packaging. A lot of the surveyed people also consider plastic to be more of a harmful pollutant than metal.

Ideally, there has never been a better time to back the idea to use metal for future packaging rather than plastics. With metal we would have much more environmentally friendly packaging and the desire to recycle may just become that more important.

So, what’s the conclusion?

Well we have the evidence to show that people are willing to save the planet by spending more, therefore it’s now time for the corporations to start to considering the purchasing decisions made by their customers and see how they can implement more sustainable packaging in with their products.

What are you doing with your packaging or buying habits to make them more sustainable for the planet?
